In late September 2024, Hurricane Helene struck Florida and swiftly cut a wide swath of destruction from the Gulf Coast to the Carolinas. Catastrophic flooding and high winds not only caused billions in damage, but also the tragic loss of over 200 people. Many remained without running water or power for over a month, waiting for help to arrive.
Nearby in Alabama, the Coviak family were profoundly affected by the devastation of their neighbors and moved to act. James, a longtime truck driver and safety instructor, and his son Ashton, a driver apprentice at Ruan Transportation, knew they had the skills and equipment needed to deliver critical aid to people in need.
The Coviak family posted a request for donations and, within 24 hours, filled a trailer with food, water, and necessities thanks to overwhelming support from neighbors and local businesses. James and Ashton personally delivered these supplies to the storm survivors and first responders in Atkinson County.
Today, Transport Topics honors James and Ashton Coviak. They responded to devastation with care and compassion, delivering relief and hope when it was needed most. For this, they are the deserving recipients of the 2025 Transport Topics Trucking’s Frontline Heroes award.
